Northern Beaches sandstone spends its life in damp shade near gardens and bush, so it grows black mould, green algae and lichen faster than almost any stone. Left alone, the growth holds moisture against the surface and the staining sets deeper each winter, which is why older walls end up looking almost black.

High pressure strips the weathered face off the stone and leaves it pitted and rougher than it started, and a rougher surface holds more moisture and regrows mould faster than before. That is why a cheap pressure clean often looks worse a year later.
We treat the growth instead of blasting it. A cleaning solution goes on at low pressure and is left to do the work, so the mould and algae die inside the stone rather than being scoured off the top of it. Then it comes off with a rinse at a pressure the stone can actually take.
The priority on every sandstone job is not damaging the stone, and everything follows from that: low pressure, dwell time instead of force, plants wet down and rinsed off afterwards, and an honest answer up front about what will and will not shift. If a piece of stone is too fragile to clean safely, we say so rather than risk it.

You can, and it is one of the most common ways sandstone gets ruined. In most cases yes. Black biological staining usually clears well. Deep mineral staining varies, and we are honest about what will and will not shift before we start.
On the stone itself: the area, the condition, the level of growth and how delicate the surface is. Heritage and older stone takes more care and time than newer sawn blocks. Shade, moisture and organic matter. Sandstone is porous, and on the Northern Beaches it usually sits near gardens, trees or bush, so mould and algae root into the surface and build into a dark crust over the years. It is biological staining, not the stone itself changing, which is why proper cleaning brings the original colour back.
Usually one to two years, longer for stone in open sun. Damp, shaded stone near gardens regrows sooner. Because our treatment kills the growth inside the stone rather than just rinsing the surface, the result lasts far longer than an untreated blast, which on sandstone is risky anyway.
Yes. We use a penetrating sealer that soaks into the stone rather than forming a film on top, so the sandstone keeps its natural colour and stays breathable. It goes on after the stone is cleaned and fully dry, never over the top of growth, and it slows the regrowth rather than stopping it.
Longer than a normal pressure clean, because care takes time. A feature wall or set of steps usually takes a few hours, larger walls and paved areas can take a day. The treatment needs dwell time to break down the growth before we rinse. We give you a clear timeframe when we quote.
Yes, gently. Older and heritage stone has a softer, weathered face that high pressure would destroy, so it only ever gets our low-pressure treatment approach. We have cleaned plenty of older walls, pillars and steps across the Northern Beaches. If a piece of stone is too fragile to clean safely, we will say so rather than risk it.
Yes, managed properly. Sandstone almost always sits right in the garden, so we wet down the surrounding plants first, apply the treatment to the stone only, and rinse the greenery thoroughly afterwards. Ferns and delicate plants hard up against the stone can be covered while we work.
