Retaining walls sit in shade and hold moisture, so they go green and black with mould and lichen faster than almost any other surface. We bring them back to a clean, even finish using the right pressure, or low-pressure soft washing where the wall is older or rendered.
Sandstone, concrete sleeper, besser block and rendered retaining walls all clean up well when the method is matched to the surface.
On the Northern Beaches, retaining walls usually back onto gardens or bush, which means constant moisture from the soil behind them, leaf litter feeding the growth and deep shade most of the day. Green algae arrives first, then black mould and lichen, and within a few years the wall reads as a dark smudge instead of a feature.

Yes. Sandstone is soft, so we use controlled low pressure and soft washing to lift the mould and black staining without pitting or scarring the stone.
Retaining walls stay shaded and damp, which is exactly what mould, algae and lichen need to grow. Cleaning clears the growth and the organic film feeding it, and we can talk through how to slow it coming back.
On the wall: its length and height, the material, the condition and how easy it is to reach. A long sandstone wall down a battle-axe drive is a different job to a low block wall out front. Every quote is free and no obligation, and we are happy to price from photos for straightforward walls.
Not the way we do it. We assess the wall first and keep pressure well below what sound masonry tolerates, dropping to soft washing on older mortar, rendered faces and soft stone. If a wall already has failing mortar or drummy render, we point it out before starting rather than clean over a problem.
Most walls take one to three hours, with long runs, tall terraced walls or heavy lichen taking longer. Soft washing adds dwell time while the treatment breaks the growth down. We confirm a realistic window with your quote, and walls bundle nicely with a driveway or path clean in the same visit.
Expect roughly a year or more of clean wall, sometimes two on sunnier walls. Retaining walls regrow faster than most surfaces because the soil behind keeps them damp. Killing the growth at the root, rather than blasting the surface, is what buys the extra time, and a repeat clean is quicker and easier than the first.
Yes, that describes most of the walls we do. Plants above and below the wall are wetted down before we apply anything and rinsed clean afterwards, and trailing plants are lifted aside gently rather than cleaned around. The treatment goes on the wall face, not the garden, and we keep it that way.
No, it is our home ground. Bush-backed walls just need a bit more planning: we clear leaf litter off the capping, work with the access that exists, and set expectations honestly, since walls under heavy tree cover regrow sooner. The transformation on a bush-side wall is usually the most dramatic of all.
Yes, provided the neighbour is happy for us to access their side. Plenty of jobs are arranged between neighbours, sometimes with the cost shared, and doing both faces in one visit is more economical than two bookings. We just need access agreed before the day.
